The fun continued as I decided to push open a small door to my right. Here was a tiny room and at the end of this room was an old stone slab, directly adjacent to several decade-old Ottoman toilets. Due to the light and how it reflected around this tiny space, I opted to not take a peek at the traditional Ottoman toilet. This view satisfied me, and the image I saw was simply a few clicks away from my camera.
I noticed an old decayed mirror frame on the wall, and the sound of running water drip, drip, drip, like a metronome, sounding its regular interval. Immediately I thought, this tap had been dripping since its last occupants. How many thousands of wasted litres had been washed down the plughole, how much thirst could this tap have quenched? I stood and wondered for a moment.
As I stood there pondering another childhood memory flashed back to life. We used to call it a ‘stubborn tap’ because as children we had to twist with all our might for it to function as it should. At times, we end up breaking it in the process.
Looking at that antique black and white electrical switch, I remember how I had to climb on a stool to turn it on or off, hearing that clicking sound brought so many memories. Seeing the electric wire dangling over the walls and beneath the roof reminds me of our guardians’ warning about the risk of electric shocks. So many memories in such a tiny room.
