Laid to Rest
This image made me realise that beds have been in existence for centuries. The structure of a bed has remained remarkably the same, just like the early Egyptian bed frames, these are also made with horizontal slats and simple rectangular legs.
This abandoned mud brick home is more than four hundred years old. Oddly, one frame sits perpendicular to the wall, whilst the other frame is placed halfway across it. How these two are positioned, looks like two pieces of art displayed in Rize Atatürk Museum.
As I approached the frames, unknowingly through many years of neglect, the floor started to give under the weight. Crack, snap, pop. I stopped suddenly in my tracks, I was completely motionless. At this point, the only thing that crossed my mind was the brand new Leica Q2 around my neck. If I were to fall, it would be a single floor, what was beneath me? How would my camera hold up?
I’d committed, turning back was the same distance to the concrete sub-floor where I stood moments ago, safe. I took a gamble and took a small step to see the timber frames. The joints were still pinned tightly with their original nails, hence, the bed stands were very strong. I stood there thinking for a split second, “why waste so many nails on just one joint?” Overall, the quality of the woodwork was top-notch. For its age, these have stood the test of time, and having explored them a little closer these would comfortably sleep more generations to come.
I stood there in amazement, I had made an impressive discovery, the wooden floors are still relatively well preserved under the thin layer of dust and strawn leaves, the pastel colours of the traditional room in Turkey and the two frames all made a wonderful spectacle. It was worth the gamble, knowing this was a picture to never be duplicated.
