Where The Past Begins

Set back from the Devlet Sahil Yolu Highway, Trabzon, Turkey, I came across a living room inside an abandoned house. I had heard so many people say good things about Trabzon, and how this place was a highly important region for the Persia and Caucasus for trade. There was much history in Trabzon, from when the city was founded as a Greek colony back in the iron age as a “Trading Colony”.

On entry, I quickly scouted for things to photograph. The main living room was very small, and at first glance looked to be well thought out. The person who designed this home took their time when plotting out the rooms, installing multiple windows. Allowing this area to be filled with natural daylight. The yellow painted walls made the room feel warm on entry.

The fireplace was well constructed. and there were shelves on either side. I imagined the stone storage areas were used to store pieces of wood for the fire during the winter seasons. And after a hard day’s work in the tea plantation, this would be a place where you could unwind and spend quality time with your family.

The timber ceiling was in a very bad state. I could see a plastic bag hanging from the ceiling, the bag may have been used to hold off rain or snow from ravaging the living room entirely.

A house that stems from centuries ago, could well be brought back to life if there were cause to take on such a passion project. How sad for this home to fall by the wayside. However, this is extremely common in Northern Turkey. Homes are simply left for nature to reclaim as its own.
