St. Ives Nursing Home

A grade II lısted buıldıng, St Ives was formerly a care home for the elderly totalling 48 bedrooms.

Summer is upon us here in the United Kingdom and today is hot unlike any other. On this particular day I decided to drive to Bingley, where I had previously been tipped off about the grade II listed building within the “St Ives” Parkland area. As I parked my car I took in the beautiful views in which this almost 200 year nursing home overlooks.

I began walking towards the home, up the sprawling driveway. The 550-acre property housed pine plantations, various other wooded areas, moorland and several ponds, all of which were there for the casual walker to enjoy, all of which were perfectly manicured.

I was warned before I went to the house that it had been vacant for nearly a decade and that a security van would be strategically located right out front of the main door. Nor the van or the home was showing signs of life, so I jumped over the side gate and peered through the side dining room window.

A figure darted across the archway. And again the same person returned and made a beeline for the kitchen. I began to bang on the window, pointing frantically toward the front door.

A security person answered, and before I could say a word he said: “sorry no English”. I quickly pointed to my camera and said “photo photo” pointing over his shoulder. He agreed and kindly showed me throughout the interior.

On entry I noticed the date 1890 above the door frame, cast out of stone, I was in awe, what a splendidly well-kept building. Immediately in front of me was this grand staircase case fit for royalty. The light-flooded through the 20-foot windows down the stairwell.

This trip was worth the drive and certainly worth the persistence.
