Barkerend Mill Bradford

I saw several unscrupulous characters walking through the rubble toward me, so I quickly breached the building through a hole in the wall. Now inside, sadly all I see is the remanence of drug paraphernalia, discarded by those that sadly chose the wrong path in life.

I entered the first floor, paused for a while, and as I took in my surroundings, all I could see and smell was the aftermath of a fire that had viciously ripped through this building 2-years prior. The ceilings were scarred and charred from the recent ferociousness of the fire, omitting a green and yellow hue throughout. All of the vertical supporting structural beams still wore their turquoise colour at their footing. It was raw and the smell was intense, though somehow I could still appreciate this building in its current state.

Erected in 1815, by the Garnetts family, this former steam-powered worsted-spinning mill once was home to hundreds of factory workers. This 5-storey building once housed 170 tonnes of machinery. All run by a single-engine that drove the entire company’s machines by a single rope.

Sadly the Barkerend Mill fell victim to several arson attacks in 2007, 2009 and again in 2019. There were plans to turn the mill into an apartment complex. Though today it serves as a makeshift, self administrative “shoot-up” place for Bradford’s heroin users and homeless people wanting to keep dry from the unpredictable weather conditions here in West Yorkshire.
